The speakers in your local cinema are almost certainly Krix. Now you can have the same sound at home.
Krix is an Adelaide company. Founded in 1974 by Scott Krix, a freshly graduated electronic engineer who had been building speakers in his garage for friends and family since university, it began as a local hi-fi shop before finding its true calling in 1978 when Scott was commissioned to design and build a new speaker system for the Capri Theatre in Goodwood — and in solving the theatre's acoustics problem, invented the world's first infinite baffle wall speaker system. The Australian cinema industry took notice immediately. By the end of the decade Krix speakers were behind the screens of virtually every major picture house in the country.
Today, Krix commercial cinema speakers are installed in over 4,500 cinemas across more than 40 countries. Every single one designed, engineered, and built in Adelaide.
That commercial cinema expertise is not marketing context. It is the direct engineering heritage behind everything Krix makes for the home. The horn technology, the waveguide designs, the constant-directivity coverage patterns, the bass driver engineering — all of it developed in the context of sound systems that have to fill a cinema reliably, night after night, at reference volume. When those same principles are applied to a home cinema or hi-fi system, the result is speakers that most brands at similar prices cannot match for sheer dynamic authority and intelligibility.
The Series MX - behind-screen cinema, properly done
The Series MX range is the most direct translation of Krix's commercial cinema work into a home product. These are modular, behind-screen speaker systems designed to be installed behind an acoustically transparent projection screen, exactly as you would find in a commercial cinema. Sound comes directly from behind the picture, locked to the action on screen in a way that no conventional speaker placement can replicate.
The MX-10 is sized for medium rooms. The MX-20 MK2 is built for rooms four to seven metres long and features Krix's proprietary constant-directivity horn and compression driver for effortless high-frequency coverage at volume. The MX-30 moves to commercial-grade components — a 380mm mid-bass driver with a 75mm voice coil and Krix's patented 90x40 degree constant-directivity horn — for larger rooms of five to fourteen metres. All Series MX products are made to order in the Krix Adelaide facility with approximately a two-week build time.
Home entertainment speakers, hi-fi and home theatre in one range
For rooms without a projection screen, or for systems where the speakers are visible, the Krix home entertainment range covers bookshelf speakers, floorstanders, and centre channels. The entire range is timbre-matched, so mixing speakers across a surround system produces a seamlessly consistent sound from every channel.
The Esoterix Altum is Krix's flagship bookshelf speaker, built around a Scanspeak Revelator ring-radiator tweeter — one of the most respected high-end tweeter designs in the world — paired with a 165mm natural wood fibre cone driver in a fully-mitred cabinet with a precision waveguide for controlled dispersion and imaging. It is a two-channel hi-fi speaker first and foremost, for listeners who want to sit with a record or a high-resolution file and hear what those sources actually contain.
The Acoustix MK2 is Krix's most versatile bookshelf — winner of the 2015 Sound+Image Loudspeaker of the Year in its category. Dual 130mm drivers deliver bass normally associated with floorstanders, and it performs equally well as the foundation of a two-channel stereo system or as the left and right channels of a surround setup.
The Equinox MK5 is the compact entry point — a single 130mm driver and ring-radiator tweeter in a smaller footprint, suited to desktop listening, smaller rooms, or surround duty on stands.
The Neuphonix MK2 is the floorstander in the range — a larger-scale speaker for bigger rooms and listeners who want effortless volume and full-range performance without a subwoofer in music listening mode.
For home cinema builds using the home entertainment range, the Graphix MK2 centre channel is matched to the Acoustix MK2, sharing identical drivers for seamless timbre across the front soundstage. The Epicentrix MK2 is the larger centre option, matched to the Neuphonix MK2, with four 130mm bass drivers for dialogue that carries authority even in large rooms.
In-ceiling, in-wall and the LX-7
The Atmospherix A20 in-ceiling speaker features a 20-degree angled baffle that redirects sound toward the listening position — a genuinely useful design choice that improves clarity and imaging from a ceiling-mounted speaker. The IC-80 is the high-performance in-ceiling option, using a 200mm bass driver and professional-grade compression tweeter in a dual-concentric configuration for wide, consistent coverage indoors and outdoors.
The Phonix In-Wall and Phonix Flat provide surround and height channel solutions for rooms where hidden or surface-mounted speakers are required. The LX-7 is Krix's linear LCR passive soundbar — three channels of genuine Krix performance in a single slim enclosure for rooms where a full speaker system is not practical but where a conventional soundbar will not do.
Subwoofers
The Seismix range covers everything from compact apartment-friendly designs to serious cinema subwoofers. The Seismix 1 Evara and Seismix 1 MK6 are compact, down-firing designs for rooms where bass performance and space efficiency both matter. The Seismix 3 MK7 and Seismix 3 DF MK2 step up to Krix-designed 275mm long-throw drivers with 30 percent greater linear cone excursion than conventional designs. The Cyclonix 12 is a passive wall-mount subwoofer designed as a companion to the Series MX systems. The Seismix Wireless Transmitter connects any compatible Seismix subwoofer to an AV receiver wirelessly, transmitting an uncompressed 24-bit/192kHz signal with no audible latency.
All Krix speakers carry a five-year manufacturer's warranty. All are designed, engineered, and built in Adelaide.
