Dan Clark Audio started life as MrSpeakers in 2012 - a company initially focused on improving and redesigning headphones that were already available on the market.
This first step allowed Dan Clark to work on his true goal - funding the development of his own ground-up designs without incurring debt or seeking funding from investors.
Dan Clark first focused on a very specific problem: how to make closed headphones sound more “open” while delivering the isolation many headphone users required. The result was the world’s first 3D printed headphone, the Alpha Dog, a lively and fun headphone.
The revenue from the Alpha Dog project funded the development of the first in-house headphones: ETHER. From this stage, Dan Clark has become a leading manufacturer of planar magnetic headphones, winning awards and accolades from all around the globe for his range which includes the Ether 2, Ether Flow 1.1, Ether C Flow Headphones, Voce, Aeon Flow 2 (Aeon 2) & Aeon RT.
The History Of Dan Clark Audio
Hi-Fi & quality audio has been Dan Clark’s passion since childhood. Long before Dan Clark Audio was even a thought, he vividly recalls jamming the air-guitar to The Beatles on his dad’s McIntosh tube amp and Wharfedale speakers.
During his college years, he worked in a high-end retail audio boutique and focused his studies on analog power amplifiers - building the passion and expertise that would lead to 'MrSpeakers' & Dan Clark Audio.
Dan received his BS in engineering from Swarthmore College and an MBA from San Jose State University and Apple Computer. He went on to spend 3 decades in high-tech managerial and executive roles, working in companies ranging from small startups to Apple Computer, Compaq and Sun Microsystems.
Dan found this stimulating work and was highly proficient in these roles, but his real passion was still music and he couldn't deny that audio engineering was calling him.
In the late 1990s, Dan started work as a loudspeaker design consultant for several high-end audio and Hi-Fi companies, developing many class-leading products including the critically acclaimed Platinum Audio Series 2 Loudspeakers (the flagship range from the highly-regarded British Hi-Fi manufacturer Monitor Audio).
As the personal audio market exploded with the advent of devices like the Apple iPod and smartphones, Dan became interested in the associated headphone market.
In 2008 he began working on modifying and improving headphones for personal enjoyment. He joined a community of enthusiasts who modified headphones where he both learned and shared a lot about the craft.
Over 10 years later MrSpeakers undertook a rebranding to become Dan Clark Audio, and today is an industry leader in designing light weight planar headphones that set the standard for sound quality and user experience (both open back and closed back).
Dan Clark Audio has secured six patents for technology and design incorporated into proprietary headphones. Dan Clark Audio’s emphasis on balancing sonic performance, comfort and value, with exceptional quality, has resulted in dozens of industry honours for top quality, from organizations as diverse as “hi-fi+” to “The absolute sound,” “HFN,” and The New York Times Wirecutter.
