Nat's thoughts:

With the look and feel of yesteryear but today's engineering, there's nothing else really like the Wharfedale LINTON Heritage (outside of its little brother the Denton 85s that is). These speakers have a relaxed and laid-back sound that lets you listen to them for hours and hours without feeling fatigued no matter how heavy the music.

To complete the vintage look the LINTON even comes with dedicated speaker stands that are designed to hold your favourite records, the perfect home for those you keep in high rotation. These speakers really do sound every bit as classic as they look.

Manufacturers Details:

To celebrate its history, Wharfedale has established the Heritage Series recreations of famous models from its past, entirely re-engineered using contemporary techniques and materials. The latest loudspeaker to join this collection is the Linton.

The original Linton debuted in 1965 and the line continued in various iterations until the end of the 1970s. It was a classic model of its time, viewed as a serious hi-fi speaker but also relatively affordable. Its cabinet was substantial, big enough to hold three drive units including a good-sized bass unit, yet not overly unwieldy by the standards of the day.

The new Linton has a clear family resemblance. It, too, is a three-way standmount model – a rarity in the modern era – retaining similar proportions to the classic Linton models. Its wood-veneered cabinet has a vintage look, yet the standard of finish is distinctly contemporary.

Engineered With Care:

The Linton makes use of its wide baffle by incorporating a large (by modern standards) bass driver with a 200mm Kevlar cone, mounted on a rigid, die-cast chassis. Above this sits a 135mm midrange driver, also sporting a woven Kevlar cone and housed within its own internal enclosure. Finally, a 25mm fabric-dome tweeter with a high-flux ferrite magnet handles high frequencies.

The original Linton incarnations of the 1960s and 1970s were well known for their rich and natural sound quality; the new model retains these attributes but upgrades the performance in every department. Its bass is deep and well-defined, its midrange clear and open, with free-breathing dynamics and an expansive scale that brings music to life. It is a sound you can dive into and lose yourself in, as you listen to album after album; a nostalgic nod to the past elevated to a level fit for the future.

Key Features:

This is a speaker that exudes authenticity, designed to appeal to the dedicated music-lover.

In keeping with a design intended to be treasured, the new Linton sports hand-matched wood veneers and matching stands with a similarly classic style. Custom-made to ensure each speaker is sited at the perfect height for a seated listener, the stand’s rigid metal frame ensures critical damping of unwanted vibrations, embellished with wood-veneered panels at the top and bottom to complement the speakers. The design even provides space to store vinyl records within the stand’s structure.

Gabi Recommends:

To build a hi-fi system that is performance-focused and is beaming with vintage charm pair the Wharfedale Denton LINTON Heritage with Leak Stereo 130, Leak CDT, Pro-Ject X1 Turntable, and AudioQuest Rocket 11 Speaker Cable.

Bargain of the Century.

It has been a few years since I last spent money on decent HiFi equipment having had worked in the industry back in the early 90’s and owning a number of setups looking for the holy grail of the perfect system. If I have learned anything it is that system synergy is a real thing and that achieving a resulting sound that keeps you wanting to listen to your favourite tunes.
I have my new Lintons currently driven from a low powered class D amp, chi-fi DAC and Raspberry Pi streamer as I wait for my NAD C3050le order to arrive.
Even with the cheap gear connected to the Lintons it is easy to see why they are so popular. The sound is large scale with great bass weight and definition that doesn’t bleed into the midrange and no mid bass hump. Midrange has realistic tone and good detail and the treble balance is in line with the rest of the frequencies.
One thing I noticed about the tweeter is that it’s not as laidback as I was expecting which could be run in or sensitivity to some courseness from my cheap class D amp. In a nutshell though the thing that these speakers definitely do is bring life and fun to whatever is being played through them. I’m looking forward to hearing what the more price appropriate NAD C3050 LE is going to do for the Lintons. Stay tuned for the review on that combo when it comes in.
